English painter and sculptor. Born in Marylebone, Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, paintings that were intended to form part of an epic symbolic cycle, in which the emotions and aspirations of life would all be represented in a universal symbolic language. He was also a talented portrait painter. He was influenced by Michelangelo, Giotto and Rossetti, and worked in a great range of styles.
