French artist, born in the Jewish Pale of Settlement in Russia and considered one of the most celebrated painters of the 20th century. Chagall took inspiration from Jewish folk-life, and portrayed many Biblical themes reflecting his pious background, the joy and suffering of his people and the tumultuous modern world. Chagall's work was influenced by several modern art movements, including avant-garde, fauvism, and cubism. His large oeuvre of paintings, etchings, lithographs and other media combines happiness and optimism with nostalgia and longing, using vivid colors and fantasy images.
