Austrian expressionist painter, caricaturist, writer and poet. Born in Vienna, already at a young age he showed artistic promise. Along with his father, Nathan Birnbaum, he turned away from Zionism and toward traditional diaspora religiosity. When Austria was occupied by Nazi Germany, he and his family fled to Holland and survived the Holocaust by hiding in the forests there. Among other works, he illustrated the song “Chad Gadya” from the Hagaddah, “Alice in Wonderland” and the Book of Jonah.
