Israeli painter, writer, and children books illustrator. One of the pioneers of Israeli modern art. The Arab peasants that he painted in his earlier works are solid and cumbersome, connected to the earth and the landscape, a connection that is present also in Gutman's later, more fragile figures. The gleaming colors, light, and ornamental elements in his work are distinctly Mediterranean. Gutman's style in the 50's and 60's became almost abstract.
