German sculptor of the period of Germany's unification and its establishment as an Imperialist power. During a period of study in Italy, from 1856 to 1858, he was influenced in the direction of a naturalistic style in sculpture. Begas was strongly influenced by the work of Michelangelo and by the art of the Baroque period. His work is highly dramatic and stresses nationalist themes and heroes.
