French illustrator, painter, and sculptor. A creative artist who started out as a caricaturist, Dore created many sculptures and large religious and historical paintings; however it was his prints and engravings that created his reputation. His masterpieces are is his illustration of the Old Testament and his realistic rendering of the slums of London. Dore influenced Van Gogh, the Symbolists and the Surrealists.
