Dutch international gothic painter. Born in Maaseik, van Eyck was employed as painter and courtier by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. He is responsible for developing techniques for the full exploitation of the qualities of oil painting, building up layers of transparent glazes, thus providing a surface on which to capture minute details in his naturalistic style. These techniques also made possible the permanent retention of the colors of his paintings. He painted both religious subjects and every day life, as well as portraits. According to an inscription in the Ghent Altarpiece, van Eyck finished this monumental work on the death of his brother Hubert; however scholars believe that in fact the Altarpiece is entirely Jan van Eyck's work and some even doubt the existence of Hubert.
