American painter. James is a self-taught artist, born in Brooklyn. She paints religious subjects and visual dramatizations of Bible stories using iconography derived from Ethiopian Christian art. Using bright colors, intricate patterns, and sometimes surreal imagery, she paints women, families, and scenes of everyday life.
